Course details

This two-day lithography and monotype printing course is an opportunity to explore the creative practice of Mokulito (plywood lithography), woodcut, and monotype techniques.

Mokulito technique relies on drawing a greasy image onto a plywood plate, you’ll see your work change over the course of a print run and can generally only use each plate for one edition. We use traditional lithography materials to draw onto the plywood, inking and printing the plate with our offset press. You’ll work with the natural detail of the wood, learning to explore this unique printing technique.

A monotype is a unique printed image that you’ve built up layer by layer using stencils. Both techniques suit experimental prints and teach you transferable skills for other printmaking methods.

The course will start with an introduction to the printmaking space, then you’ll spend two days in a series of taught workshops and skills development sessions with enough space and time to explore your creative ideas.

You’ll prepare, edit and print a varied edition of colourful prints as you learn how to think in layers and develop confidence in your printmaking abilities. You’ll learn to use a range of drawing materials and techniques to vary your results, and there’ll be plenty of time for experimentation and creative play as we explore mark making, colour mixing, and printing techniques.

The course will conclude with a peer review of each participant’s work. You’ll take all your work away with you at the end of the course.

All materials are included in the course fee using professional-standard printmaking supplies, and tea/coffee each day.

This is an outline of what to expect for this course. Over the course of 2 days, you’ll work in our exceptional printmaking facilities supported by our technical team:

Day 1

Becky will introduce you to the printmaking space and give a demonstration of preparing and printing a mokulito block. You'll then prepare and draw on your own wood for printing the following day.

The afternoon will be spent exploring colour mixing and the monotype process to create backgrounds and stencils for combining with the mokulito prints. You'll have the option to add woodcut marks to your block too.

Day 2

We’ll print our mokulito blocks in the morning, this will be a collaborative process with the group working in pairs and Becky providing support.

The afternoon will be spent making monotype and woodcut edits to the mokulito prints.
