Course details

This course is a one day introduction to screen printing onto textiles for beginners, perfect for people who have little or no experience screen-printing or for people with some existing knowledge who’d like to extend this to printing onto a garment or product.

The course will be run by Freya Dorgan, a Senior Technician at our Fashion and Textiles Institute who specialises in print and colour and who is also a commercial illustrator creating fun and colourful imagery.

After an introduction to our screen print facilities, Freya will support you to get creative straightaway. Bring your own imagery for design inspiration or use example designs from Freya to create your print designs by hand. You’ll learn how to create stencils using cut paper and then learn about how to prepare your screen and expose your designs. We’ll screen print a two-colour design, and you can experiment with inks to create layered and vibrantly coloured designs.

There’ll be plenty of opportunity for experimentation and play, with the chance to test out your designs and skills on up to 5 pieces of sample fabric. Once you are happy with your chosen colourways and final designs, you’ll be supported to screen print onto your final product.

You will leave with your own hand-printed artwork on either a tote bag or a t-shirt.

All materials you’ll need are included, together with your final product choice (a t-shirt or a tote bag). Tea/coffee is included, please bring a packed lunch with you.

On this course, you will:

  • Be introduced to the techniques for screen printing onto textiles to produce vibrantly coloured designs
  • Use a variety of art materials to create your designs by hand, using inspirations from imagery you have brought with you or using example designs that Freya will provide.
  • Learn how to create stencils using cut paper.
  • Learn about how to expose your own designs onto a screen.
  • Learn how to screen print a two-colour design, using stencils and an exposed screen.
  • Experiment with inks to create layered artwork, with the opportunity to print up to 5 pieces of fabric to explore designs and test out your ideas, techniques, and colourways.
  • Be supported to print your final artwork onto your chosen product (a tote bag or a t-shirt).
