Develop your creative practice and screen print knowledge in this 5 day course
Course overview
This is a five-day course for practicing artist/printmakers who have an interest in furthering their screen print knowledge. You will have access to our fully equipped screen print facilities with specialist technical tuition and support.
Through a series of workshops that demonstrate the process of hand-cut stencilling, hand drawn stencils on true grain, and digital imaging, you will have the opportunity to develop a series of screen prints at a variety of sizes (A4, A3 and A2), that experiment with process techniques, colour use and layering.
Course details
Bring photographs or drawings to work from and come and spend five days immersed in screen printing in our professional-standard printmaking facilities and on location in St Ives, with expert technical tuition and guidance.
Following an introduction to the space, this course will start with a series of initial workshops that give examples of screen prints and demonstrate different ways to make a stencil. Using small screens you will play and experiment with colour/blends/mono print.
You will have the opportunity to devise and develop a series of screen prints including at larger sizes (up to A2), thinking about colour ways / colour families, layers.
Running from Monday to Friday the course will be a balance of taught technical skills through masterclasses in the morning and supported skill development and practice in the afternoon.
One day will feature a trip to Porthmeor Studios in St Ives and the Tate St Ives, with True Grain available for outdoor working.
You will have a dedicated shared studio with enough space for you to creatively breathe and explore, and the studios will be open from 09:00-21:00 each day.
On the final afternoon you will come together with students from our colour etching, drawing, and painting courses for a private view and opportunity to discuss your work.

Our Falmouth Campus is set in subtropical gardens and is just a few steps from Falmouth town centre or a short stroll to the shores of Gyllyngvase beach.

- Source material - any drawings/prints/photos you wish to work from
- Overalls, an apron or old clothing you don't mind getting messy!
- Shoes which have full foot coverage - i.e. no open-toed sandals, flip flips, etc.
All equipment and materials required are provided, however you may wish to bring your own drawing materials if preferred.

Penryn Campus
This course is based on our Falmouth Campus. If you would like to stay on-campus at our Penryn campus, our Penryn student halls accommodation can be booked. This is a simple and affordable accommodation option and there is a regular bus service from Penryn Campus to Falmouth. A mix of double and twin bedrooms are available, each with bed, desk and en-suite shower room. Bedding and towels are provided. You should bring your own toiletries. There are shared kitchen facilities.
Lunch and tea/coffee included each day on campus, all diets can be catered for.
On the day-trip to St Ives, lunch is not included as there will be enough of a break in the middle of the day to visit a café of your choice, or choose a takeaway lunch to take to the beach.
Course programme
This is an outline of what to expect for the week. Each day will include lunch, with time to socialise with your fellow students.
Day 1
After an introduction into screen print process and workshops, you’ll start preparing A4/A3 imagery looking at different ways of making stencils. You’ll learn how to expose artwork to screens, and there will be a demo of printing process looking at colour and overlays. There’ll be time to experiment with colour/blends/mono print.
Day 2
Trip to St Ives. We will visit Porthmeor Studios for talks and a private tour, as well as the Tate St Ives. True Grain will be available for outdoor drawing.
Day 3
Back in the printmaking studio, you’ll finish your initial A4 /A3 print. Following this, the focus will be on devising and developing artwork for a larger screen print (although you can continue to work smaller if preferred). Later in the afternoon we’ll prep for print.
Day 4
Today you’ll expose screens and look at colour mixing. There will be opportunity to play with colour ways, blends, mono printing, and stencilling.
Day 5
The final day will focus on resolution of your final work. In the late afternoon the course will conclude with a mini-exhibition / Private View of your work with our other Art Week course participants and a chance to celebrate your achievements.

Senior Technician
After graduating from the MA in Fine Art/ Printmaking at Wimbledon School of Art, Jane moved to Cornwall and took up a part time teaching post at Cornwall College, St Austell, where she taught art and design on a variety of BTEC courses. In 2000 she joined Falmouth University as a full time technician supporting the printmaking element of the foundation course. Since becoming a senior technician she has been delivering workshops in all aspects of printmaking to groups and individual students from foundation and graphic design, and has helped to develop safer and more environmentally sound workshop practices at Wellington Terrace.

Printmaking studios, Falmouth Campus
Nestled away just a stone's throw from the centre of town, our Falmouth Campus is composed of industry-standard facilities, relaxed learning spaces and a vast subtropical garden.
On our campus, you'll be within walking distance from Falmouth's bustling high-street and you'll also be just up the road from Gyllyngvase Beach.
The campus is close to a large public car park and also just a short walk away from Falmouth Town train station if you're using public transport from Penryn, Truro or further afield.
