Explore ensemble singing in this one-day vocal intensive designed for young singers to develop their voice and grow in performance confidence.

Through engaging warm-ups, creative harmonisation exercises and expert coaching, we’ll help you to gain or improve practical techniques for breath control, pitch accuracy and vocal blend. 

The day culminates in a collaborative final session, where your newly honed skills come together in a shared musical performance.  

Based in our professional music studio facilities and offering a supportive, hands-on environment, this course equips aspiring vocalists with the technical foundation and artistic inspiration needed to advance their singing journey. 

Tuition fees per individual: £99

Eligibility: Applicants must be aged 14 – 17

Course details

This dynamic one-day course for 14-17 year olds will help you to develop your voice, build your confidence and explore creative expression. In a hands-on and engaging environment, we’ll guide you through essential vocal techniques, ensemble singing, and performance skills.  

Working as part of a group and individually, you’ll learn how to perform with confidence and connect with your audience. You’ll receive individual feedback throughout the day to refine your technique.  

The course includes workshops on:  

  • Vocal foundations and Hocketing: strengthening your core vocal skills 
  • Harmonisation in Practice: focusing on part-singing, balance and blending 
  • Interval Training: experimenting with dissonance and enriching improvisational skills 
  • Performance Skills: working on a group performance to boost performance confidence

At the end of the day, you will have:   

  • ​Developed a strong foundation in vocal warm-up routines and breath control.  
  • ​Strengthened your pitch accuracy and explored basic interval training to heighten pitch awareness.  
  • ​Practiced harmonisation techniques, including hocketing and dissonance exercises, to broaden your musical expression.  
  • ​Cultivated performance confidence through both group singing and individual feedback.  
  • ​Presented a harmonised song in a supportive final performance.  

This course is based in our professional standard music studios at the Academy of Music and Theatre Arts, on our Penryn campus.  

You’ll be taught by our experienced Falmouth University staff. All staff teaching this course are DBS cleared and have undergone our mandatory safeguarding training. Students will be supervised through the day including break times. 

The course includes refreshments, lunch and all materials you’ll need for the day. 

This is an outline of timings to expect for the course. The day includes 5 hours of taught workshops, and time to socialise with fellow students during supervised breaks. 

9am - 9.30am: Arrival, welcome and sign-in 

9.45am: Groups will be taken to workshop locations (up to a 10-min walk across campus) 

10am – 12.30pm: Morning workshops 

12.30pm: Lunch break 

1.15 – 3.45pm: Afternoon workshops 

3.45pm: Groups will be collected from workshop locations 

4pm: Close, sign-out and collection 

Workshops on this course will cover the following topics:  

​Foundations and Hocketing  

​Begin the day by strengthening core vocal skills through targeted warm-ups, breath control, and pitch-awareness exercises. Participants will explore ‘hocketing’, a fun and interactive technique where a single melody is shared across multiple voices, sharpening listening and responsiveness. Basic harmonisation will also be introduced to help students develop an early sense of blending and collaboration.  

​Harmonisation in Practice  

​Dive deeper into harmonisation by learning and rehearsing a selected song or musical excerpt. Students will focus on part-singing, balance, and blending, applying the vocal techniques introduced earlier. Under guided coaching and supportive peer feedback, participants will cultivate confidence in creating harmonies within a small ensemble.  

​Interval Training  

​Students will expand their harmonic palette by experimenting with dissonance and interval training, exploring how shifting intervals can create unique emotional effects and enrich improvisational skills.  

​Performance Skills  

​In the culminating workshop, participants revisit and polish the song from our harmonisation workshop in preparation for a group performance, working on cohesive harmonies, performance dynamics, and ear training, Students will strengthen their vocal stability, refine their technical skills, and boost their performance confidence.  

Staff

This one-day course is run by experienced Falmouth University staff from our Academy of Music and Theatre Arts team. All staff teaching this course have enhanced DBS clearance and have undergone our mandatory safeguarding training. Students will be supervised through the day including break times. 

How you'll learn

This is an intensive, immersive vocal course where you’ll learn by doing.  Our course leaders will walk you through each vocal exercise and technique in a supportive environment. Expect to be singing throughout the day as you refine your vocal skills and improve your technical foundation. 

 

Who is this course for  

This course is for 14 – 17 year olds and is suitable for all with basic singing experience and above. It has been designed for young singers who would like to explore vocal techniques, ensemble singing and performance skills in more depth over an intensive day. 

Expect to get hands-on and creative, with a chance to broaden your experience and build your portfolio whilst having fun in a supportive and supervised environment. This one-day course is structured with 5 full hours of teaching, with breaks for lunch and refreshments. 

Workshops are led by our experienced teaching staff at Falmouth, with all staff DBS checked. The day is designed to give you a taste of what it’s like to study at Falmouth University, with all workshops based on campus in our fantastic teaching facilities.  

You may wish to bring a reusable water bottle with you, and anything else you need to feel comfortable through the day. 

Please note: we advise that phones or other personal possessions are not brought to the course, any possessions brought with you are your responsibility and Falmouth University will not be liable for any loss or damage.  

All materials you will need are included in the course fee, together with refreshments and lunch (all dietary requirements catered for).

This course is taught in our specialised studio facilities at our Academy of Music and Theatre Arts on our Penryn campus.

​​You will leave with a certificate of completion, available when you finish the day and sign out. 

This course is for 14 – 17 year olds only, and is suitable for everyone with basic singing experience and above. 

​​A parent or guardian must sign 14 and 15 year olds in and out, and be present for drop off and pick up.  If 16 and 17 year olds wish to sign themselves in and out then we will require written consent emailed to shortcourses@falmouth.ac.uk in advance of the course.  

Drop off is from 9am – 9.30am, pick up is at 4pm. 

​​Once you have booked your place you’ll be sent a participant form for further information. You can tell us about any dietary, medical, or access requirements that we need to know about on this form and you’ll also be asked to confirm that you agree to our code of conduct for under 18s.
