In the morning we’ll focus on advertising. You’ll be introduced to the concept of behavioural change, and will analyse real-world campaigns, explore the MINDSPACE framework, and develop your own intervention to influence social behaviour.
In the afternoon we’ll focus on graphic design. Using classic graphic design processes, visual play, experimentation, and collaboration, by the end of the day you’ll have created a Fanzine and presented it to the group, using critical thinking and making to communicate your ideas.

Course details
Join us for this one-day course for creative 14-17 year olds, and experience two different aspects of idea generation. You’ll gain foundational knowledge of advertising and graphic design, and strengthen your experience and portfolio of work for further study.
Our Advertising and Marketing team will kick the day off, introducing you to the concept of behavioural change to develop impactful ideas. You’ll select a behaviour of particular interest, and find and share communications that have been made to try and change that behaviour. At the end of the morning we’ll look at the behavioural change framework – MINDSPACE – and you’ll be supported to use this to come up with your own communication or intervention to change the chosen behaviour.
Following this, our Graphic Design team will lead the afternoon workshops using classic design processes, visual play, experimentation and collaboration. This will lead towards developing a Zine that collates your individual ideas into a shared ‘whole’. Building on the morning session, the notion of critical thinking will be central to your emerging work (asking smart questions), exploring how ideas you believe in can be communicated using words and pictures in the pages of a Fanzine.
On this course, you will:
- Be introduced to the power of thinking and making to impact positive change, using adverting and graphic design.
- Learn about the concept of behavioural change in advertising.
- Explore the behaviour change framework, MINDSPACE and how it can make adverts better and more effective.
- Experience an introduction to brainstorming and the creative process.
- Explore your ideas on posters and page.
- Get involved with experimental, collaborative and fun methods of communicating word and image using graphic design.
- Experience two different aspects of idea generation.
By the end of the day, you will:
- Be able to develop and visualise creative concepts using the principles of behaviour change and the design process.
- Be able to explain what the acronym of the behaviour change framework, MINDSPACE, stands for, and how it is used in design and adverting.
- Be able to understand the power of word and image in storytelling.
- Have connected thinking and making, using collage, page design and materials to produce a theme-based Fanzine.

Advertising for Good using Behaviour Change
We'll start with an introduction to advertising and behaviour change, exploring the theories behind this. We’ll then look at examples by thinking of a behaviour people do that is bad – either for health, wealth, happiness, or for the environment, and finding an advert, a social media post, a video, a TikTok, a poster, a sign, where an organisation is trying to change that bad behaviour.
We’ll discuss and explore these communications and use the MINDSPACE framework to see if we can try to explain the science behind why they have, or have not, been effective.
We’ll finish the morning with a creative activity to come up with a better and more effective way to change people’s behaviour, drawing up ideas that use the MINDSPACE framework.
Graphic Design Zines
We’ll start the afternoon by looking at how graphic design can impact change in society, politics and culture; and exploring how provocative ideas can be communicated using fanzines.
Through a series of fun and collaborative challenges, you’ll come up with some words and things that are most important to you and translate your favourites into the theme and name of your Fanzine.
Finally, we’ll move on to an intensive and energetic making session as you develop the content and design of your zine, using playful and experimental collage making to create a visual voice through form and content.
You’ll finish the day with a presentation of your final zines to the group,
