Step into one of our studios for this immersive drawing and painting course, where we’ll help you explore new techniques and develop your observational and technical skills.   

Through the course of the day, we’ll experiment with a range of materials and explore shape, form, and texture. You’ll gain confidence, push your creative boundaries, and strengthen your portfolio.  

Based in drawing studios in Penryn and led by our skilled technical team from Falmouth School of Art, this course is a fantastic way for young artists to broaden their experience in a fun and supportive environment.  

Tuition fees per individual: £99

Eligibility: Applicants must be aged 14 – 17

Course details

Unlock your creativity in this exciting hands-on day, where you’ll dive into the world of drawing and painting. You’ll explore shape, form, and texture through fun and engaging workshops that will develop your ability to visualise ideas and build your artistic skills. 

Working individually and in small groups, you’ll be exploring observational and technical skills. You’ll be encouraged to experiment with new techniques and processes through various drawing tasks, building confidence as you build your portfolio of work through the day. 

Expect a mix of quick-fire creative challenges and longer tasks, in a supportive and inspiring environment.  

On this course, you will:  

  • ​Explore creative 2D representation using a range of drawing and painting techniques.   
  • ​Experiment with painting and drawing techniques and processes through set tasks of different durations.   
  • ​Work individually and / or in groups to create visual outcomes.  
  • ​Explore a range of creative ways of thinking and expression through drawing and painting. 

At the end of the day, you will leave with work that contributes to your portfolio for further study, demonstrating a range of exploratory drawing and painting techniques and processes including:  

  • ​Still life  
  • ​Figurative representation  
  • ​Canvas preparation and making your own media   

This course is based in drawing studios in Penryn, in a unit we use for this purpose at Kernick Industrial Estate at the bottom of our Penryn campus.  

This one day course is run by experienced Falmouth University staff from our Falmouth School of Art team. All staff teaching this course are DBS cleared and have undergone our mandatory safeguarding training. Students will be supervised through the day including break times.  

The course includes refreshments, lunch, and all materials you’ll need for the day. 

This is an outline of timings to expect for the course. The day includes five hours of taught workshops, and time to socialise with fellow students during supervised breaks. 

9am - 9.30am: Arrival, welcome and sign-in 

9.45am: Groups will be taken to workshop locations (a 10 minute walk just beyond the end of our campus in Penryn, to Kernick Industrial Estate). 

10am – 12.30pm: Morning workshops 

12.30pm: Lunch break 

1.15pm – 3.45pm: Afternoon workshops 

3.45pm: Groups will be collected from workshop locations 

4pm: Close, sign-out and collection 

Workshops on this course will cover the following topics:  

  • Canvas preparation  
  • Still life  
  • ​Figurative representation  
  • Creative thinking and expression through drawing and painting 
  • Drawing and painting techniques and processes for creative 2d representation 

Staff

This 1 day course is run by experienced Falmouth University staff from our Falmouth School of Art team. All staff teaching this course have enhanced DBS clearance and have undergone our mandatory safeguarding training. Students will be supervised through the day including break times. 

How you'll learn

This is a practical course where you’ll learn through a mix of practical demonstrations and guided activities, with plenty of time to experiment and to try out new techniques.  Our course leaders will walk you through each process with clear examples. Expect to jump straight in, learning by doing, as you explore and create in a fun and inspiring environment. 

 

Who is this course for  

This course is for 14 – 17 year olds, and is suitable for all experience levels. It has been designed for creative teenagers who are interested in art and would like to spend the day exploring new drawing and painting techniques, or those who may be aiming to study art in the future and want to strengthen their experience and contribute to their portfolio. 

Expect to get hands-on and creative, with a chance to broaden your experience and build your portfolio whilst having fun in a supportive and supervised environment. This one-day course is structured with 5 full hours of teaching, with breaks for lunch and refreshments. 

This course will be split into two groups during the day, with different workshops running in parallel so that all students complete all workshops. Workshops are led by our experienced technical staff at Falmouth, with all staff DBS checked.  

Please wear clothes that you don’t mind getting messy, and sensible footwear. 

You may wish to bring a reusable water bottle with you, and anything else you need to feel comfortable through the day. 

Please note: we advise that phones or other personal possessions are not brought to the course, any possessions brought with you are your responsibility and Falmouth University will not be liable for any loss or damage.  

All materials you will need are included in the course fee, together with refreshments and lunch (all dietary requirements catered for).

This course is taught in our drawing studios in Penryn, in a unit we use for this purpose at Kernick Industrial Estate at the bottom of our Penryn campus.

We will provide further information in your course joining email after your place has been confirmed. 

​​You will leave with a certificate of completion, available when you finish the day and sign out. 

This course is for 14 – 17 year olds only, and is suitable for all experience levels with no pre-requisite knowledge required.  

A parent or guardian must sign 14 and 15 year olds in and out, and be present for drop off and pick up.  If 16 and 17 year olds wish to sign themselves in and out then we will require written consent emailed to shortcourses@falmouth.ac.uk in advance of the course.   

​ Drop off is from 9am – 9.30am, pick up is at 4pm.  

​​Once you have booked your place you’ll be sent a participant form for further information. You can tell us about any dietary, medical, or access requirements that we need to know about on this form and you’ll also be asked to confirm that you agree to our code of conduct for under 18s.
