Explore the exciting world of fashion and textiles in this one-day course designed for 14-17 year olds who want to develop new creative skills and investigate sustainable approaches to fashion. 

Based in our professional-standard textile studios, you'll build technical skills in screen printing, garment alteration, patch making and upcycling. You’ll learn about resourceful approaches to fashion and textiles, push your creative boundaries and add experience to your portfolio for further study. 

By the end of the day you’ll leave with a finished, wearable piece that showcases your creativity and new expertise.  

Tuition fees per individual: £99

Eligibility: Applicants must be aged 14 – 17

Course details

Explore a more sustainable approach to fashion and textiles in this hands-on, one-day course for 14–17-year-olds designed to foster creativity and promote resourceful techniques. 

In the morning session, you’ll dive into T-shirt customisation, mastering techniques like screen printing and creative garment alteration. This is your chance to flex your creativity and experiment with bold designs, striking patterns and vibrant colours to transform a basic tee into something completely unique. 

In the afternoon, you’ll build on your new skills, designing and creating personalised patches using sustainable garment vinyl. These can be used to add a distinctive touch to your new custom T-shirt. Discover how small changes can make a big impact on your style.  

By the end of the day, you’ll leave with a finished, wearable piece that showcases your creativity and new expertise in sustainable fashion. 

On this course, you will:   

  • Design and produce custom textile patches using sustainable materials.  
  • Apply alteration and screen printing techniques to create a personalised, wearable T-shirt.  
  • Rework T-Shirts into stylish, upcycled pieces of wearable art that demonstrate creative problem-solving and sustainable design practices. 

At the end of the day, you'll leave with practical skills in sustainable fashion and textile design, including:  

  • Garment alteration 
  • Screen printing 
  • Patch-making 
  • Upcycling 

This course is based in our professional-standard Fashion & Textiles Institute on our Penryn campus. You’ll be taught by our experienced Falmouth University staff. All staff teaching this course are DBS cleared and have undergone our mandatory safeguarding training. Students will be supervised through the day including break times. 

The course includes refreshments, lunch and all materials you’ll need for the day. 

This is an outline of timings to expect for the course. The day includes 5 hours of taught workshops, and time to socialise with fellow students during supervised breaks. 

9am - 9.30am: Arrival, welcome and sign-in 

9.45am: Groups will be taken to workshop locations (up to a 10-min walk across campus) 

10am – 12.30pm: Morning workshops 

12.30pm: Lunch break 

1.15 – 3.45pm: Afternoon workshops 

3.45pm: Groups will be collected from workshop locations 

4pm: Close, sign-out and collection 

Workshops on this course will cover the following topics:  

Screen printing 

You’ll be learning how to screen print onto textiles, putting your final design onto a T-shirt.

Garment customisation 

This workshop will cover a range of techniques, and you’ll pick your final choice of technique to use on your T-shirt.

Patch designing and making 

You’ll learn how to use sustainable garment vinyl to make your own upcycled fabric patch, to enhance any garment’s style.

Application of design 

You’ll use the skills and techniques you have learned to apply your final vinyl patch and other sample vinyl designs you have made to your customised T-shirt. 

Staff

This one-day course is run by experienced Falmouth University staff from our Fashion & Textiles team. All staff teaching this course have enhanced DBS clearance and have undergone our mandatory safeguarding training. Students will be supervised through the day including break times. 

How you'll learn

This is a practical course where you’ll learn through a mix of practical demonstrations and guided activities, with plenty of time to experiment and to try out new techniques.  Our course leaders will walk you through each process with clear examples. Expect to jump straight in, learning by doing, as you explore and create in a fun and inspiring environment.  

 

Who is this course for  

Designed for 14–17-year-olds of all experience levels, this course is perfect for young creatives interested in fashion and textiles and eager to explore sustainable approaches. Whether you're just starting out or looking to expand your skills, you'll experiment with exciting techniques, develop your own ideas, and learn how to make more eco-conscious design choices. Based in our professional textile studios and with expert guidance from our course leaders, you’ll bring your creative vision to life in a fun and inspiring environment.

Expect a hands-on and practical day, where you will combine learning new skills with developing your creative ideas. You’ll be encouraged to think about style and sustainability, to promote resourceful approaches to our fashion and textiles industry.  

The course is comprised of structured learning whilst having fun in a supportive and supervised environment. This one-day course is structured with 5 full hours of teaching, with breaks for lunch and refreshments. 

Workshops are led by our experienced teaching staff at Falmouth, with all staff DBS checked. The day is designed to give you a taste of what it’s like to study at Falmouth University, with all workshops based on campus in our fantastic teaching facilities.  

Please ensure you are wearing closed toe shoes or trainers (e.g. no flip flops or sandals), clothes that you don’t mind getting messy, and long hair tied back. 

You may wish to bring a reusable water bottle with you, and anything else you need to feel comfortable through the day. 

Please note: we advise that phones or other personal possessions are not brought to the course, any possessions brought with you are your responsibility and Falmouth University will not be liable for any loss or damage.  

All materials you will need are included in the course fee, together with refreshments and lunch (all dietary requirements catered for).

This course is taught in our fantastic Fashion & Textiles facilities on our Penryn campus.

We will provide further information in your course joining email after your place has been confirmed. 

​​You will leave with a certificate of completion, available when you finish the day and sign out. 

This course is for 14 – 17 year olds only, and is suitable for all experience levels with no pre-requisite knowledge required.  

​​A parent or guardian must sign 14 and 15 year olds in and out, and be present for drop off and pick up.  If 16 and 17 year olds wish to sign themselves in and out then we will require written consent emailed to shortcourses@falmouth.ac.uk in advance of the course.  

​Drop off is from 9am – 9.30am, pick up is at 4pm. 

​​Once you have booked your place you’ll be sent a participant form for further information. You can tell us about any dietary, medical, or access requirements that we need to know about on this form and you’ll also be asked to confirm that you agree to our code of conduct for under 18s, as well as confirming the t-shirt size you would like to make.
