Students on Falmouth’s International Business Management MSc course recently took part in a dynamic workshop led by Matthew Burton, Head of International Business Development at leading global marine insurer Skuld.

With a firm focus on sustainable development and a strong engagement with industry – both at local and global levels– the course aims to equip students with a unique combination of theoretical and practical skills to navigate the complexities and uncertainties of the modern world.

The role of shipping in international business is huge – accounting for the transport of 95 percent of global trade – yet it is often overlooked in wider conversations about globalisation and sustainable development. As a business leader at one of the world’s biggest marine insurers, Matthew’s insights into global trade were extremely useful for the students.

A strong understanding of global business and the rapidly changing landscape is essential for all aspiring business leaders. During Matthew’s workshop, students were able to explore some of these complex and diverse issues, including international geopolitics, globalisation, technology and innovation, supply chains, legislation and regulation, sanctions, financial systems and institutions, sustainable development, global energy infrastructure, decarbonisation and more.  It was clear that shipping – a key driver in international trade – affects everyone’s lives.

Dr Greg Borne, International Business Management MSc course leader, found the session to be invaluable. He said: “Matthew’s workshop was fascinating; I was especially struck by the complex systems approach that he took to explaining the interconnected issues that relate to shipping. It is exactly this perspective we aim to develop in students on the course.

“Students were also able to hear about Matthew’s career path from studying in Falmouth to becoming a leader within the international shipping insurance industry. He highlighted some guiding principles and emphasised the importance of ethics, humanity and relationship building in international business at all levels.”

Student Shruti Kapoor told us: “It was a great opportunity to learn from someone with such valuable expertise. It was insightful and engaging.” Fellow student Alpha Briggs added: “It was great to get to talk to someone with such knowledge in his industry.”
