In just over a year, Falmouth has become my home. Its beauty, community and endless opportunities have made my university experience truly one of a kind. From its captivating landscapes to its vibrant atmosphere, Falmouth offers a lifestyle unlike any other in the UK.
The Sea
Growing up by the sea has always been a part of my life, yet it’s here in Falmouth where I truly appreciate it. With three breathtaking beaches just a 20-minute stroll from Falmouth Town, the sea offers endless delights regardless of the season. From rock-pooling and quiet beach reads during the winter, to vibrant BBQs and spirited volleyball matches in the summer, there’s never a dull moment. Personally, sea swimming has become my sanctuary and a key activity for my mental well-being throughout the year. Long walks along the shoreline and around Pendennis Point also provide moments of tranquility amidst the bustling student life. In Falmouth, the sea isn’t just a backdrop; it’s a cherished companion that enriches every aspect of university life
The Pubs and Restaurants
Whether you want a big night out with your mates or just a simple meal, Falmouth offers a diverse range of culinary delights, from Pennycomequick a cosy traditional pub, to Kona offering Hawaiian cuisine. Pubs and restaurants in Falmouth are vibrant social hubs where friends gather to unwind, celebrate milestones and catch up with peers. With its coastal location, Falmouth also produces locally-sourced seafood, from your classic Fish and Chips, to gourmet seafood platters. In addition, both the dining scenes and pubs are student-friendly with a range of establishments providing special discounts and deals catering to student budgets.
The Live Music
As a student who loves music, Falmouth offers a vibrant live music scene. From intimate gigs in pubs, to electrifying performances at larger venues, Falmouth offers a diverse array of musical experiences that cater to every taste and mood. What makes the live music scene here truly special is its inclusivity; whether you enjoy a local indie band at The Chintz, or DNB at Fives Below, or Folk Club at Cornish Bank, there’s always something for everyone to enjoy. There are also a range of talents, from The Pharcyde at Princess Pavilions, to our own students’ work across a range of venues. There is always something that you can attend by yourself or with all your mates!
The People and Community
The sense of community within both the town and university is one of the most cherished aspects of my experience. Whether it’s striking up a conversation with a friendly local at the pub, or collaborating with other students and local businesses, there is a sense of community wherever you go. The university itself is a melting pot of creativity and collaboration, where faculty and staff are not just educators but mentors, who are deeply invested in the success and well-being of students within an inspiring educational environment. Students are also encouraged to collaborate across courses and societies, which brings like-minded people together to bring something for the community, university and your future. Meanwhile, the town’s community events, from beach clean-up to a range of festivals, provide endless opportunities for students to engage, contribute and feel part of something bigger.
The Location
Nestled along the stunning Cornish coastline, Falmouth’s natural beauty never fails to inspire. From strolls along the scenic coastal paths, to exhilarating water sports on its crystal-clear water, there’s endless exploration to be had. Moreover, Falmouth’s proximity to other picturesque towns, such as Penzance, St Ives and Truro, provides opportunities for adventure and discovery. Whether it’s exploring historic landmarks, local markets or arts and culture, there’s always something new to experience nearby. In addition, Cornwall’s calendar is filled with events such as the Falmouth Sea Shanty Festival, Boardmasters Festival and Porthleven Food Festival, where you can immerse yourself in music, culture and culinary delights.
Overall, with its stunning sea, vibrant live music, welcoming pubs and restaurants and a close-knit community, Falmouth offers a unique university experience. It’s a place where friendships flourish, creativity thrives and adventures await at every corner. For students, Falmouth is not just a place to study; it’s a place to live fully.
