Why I chose to study Fashion Marketing at Falmouth

When I began thinking about what to study at university, I knew I wanted to do something creative. My favourite subjects had always been textiles and business, and I have been interested in fashion since a young age. My go-to thought was to study fashion design, but upon looking at courses, I felt daunted by the nature of design as I often struggled in GCSE and A-Level textiles with high amounts of making and sewing. My dad suggested I marry my two interests in fashion and business by looking into fashion management or fashion marketing courses, which turned out to be perfect! Since I wanted to study a course which is taught within the realm of business, but still allows me to express myself creatively, fashion marketing was the best choice for me – especially since marketing is seen as the most creative sector of business.
When I began to investigate fashion marketing courses in more detail, Falmouth’s course really stood out to me. One of the reasons was because it offered a much more innovative range of modules than other unis, where we are given freedom to express ourselves through our work while still learning about the nature of marketing from a business standpoint. Additionally, we learn about the culture of fashion, and we have been exposed to the serious challenges within the industry that are up to our generation to solve. Since Falmouth holds a strong ethos for sustainability and eco-conscious practice, much of what we learn is centred around how we can push for change in fashion, since it is the third most polluting industry in the world.
From my time on the course, I have developed an extensive portfolio of knowledge and skills which have given me real confidence in my future.
I have found myself developing an excellent range of transferrable skills including:
- Clear and creative visual communication
- Using Adobe platforms like InDesign and Photoshop
- Research and critical thinking
- Public speaking
- Marketing frameworks
- Innovative thinking and problem solving
I'm in my final year now, and a factor which has made this course so enjoyable is our amazing tutors, Emma and Lizzie, who are incredibly knowledgeable and always supportive throughout every module.
There have been some real highlights module-wise. I loved the first year’s Visual Communications module, where we collaborated with Commercial Photography BA students to create a magazine publication from scratch on a topic of our choice. It was an amazing opportunity to meet new people and have the chance to work with photographers and use the studio spaces.
I also really enjoyed the Branding module in second year, where we were given a randomly generated name for our brand and the target audience for it. I was given ‘Down Company’, a high street brand aimed at women aged 18-60. From here we had full freedom to design exactly what our brand looked like aesthetically, and we created a communication brand book.
My favourite most recent module was Global Fashion Futures, a big research and predictions project which mimicked the nature of trend forecasting. This consisted of a large research report and culminated in a business-facing consultancy report which we presented. Although it was a lot of work it was very interesting and rewarding!
I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience on the Fashion Marketing course at Falmouth and have also had a brilliant time in Falmouth more broadly. When I graduate in 2025, my goal is to work for a non-profit organisation like Fashion Roundtable who are fostering environmental and ethical change within the fashion industry. From my time on the course, I have developed an extensive portfolio of knowledge and skills which have given me real confidence in my future.
