Illustration BA(Hons) (Online) student Fynn Dodd has collaborated with West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service on a recent module project, creating a series of illustrations showcasing the firefighters, their equipment and the vital work they do to save lives.
Inspired by his own personal interest in the fire service, Fynn reached out to his local fire station and arranged a series of visits to their new state-of-the-art premises. During his visits to the station, he took photographs which he then used as references to create his graphite and coloured pencil illustrations.
Fynn also spent time speaking with the station manager about their equipment and processes, as well as interviewing one of the firefighters about her experience and journey within the fire service.
On the project, Fynn told us: “I found that building a rapport with the firefighters helped me to broaden my understanding of the topic and feel more connected with my subject matter. One of the challenges I encountered was capturing and understanding some of the equipment used by the staff, but they were so helpful. On completion of my project, I decided to organise a fundraiser selling some of my prints, to give back to the men and women that helped me with my project. So far, I have raised £352 for The Firefighters Charity.”
As a second year Illustration BA (Online) student, Fynn spearheaded the project in response to the ‘Shape’ module, which gave him the freedom to choose his own subject. He told us: “Studying illustration online has enabled me to set my own pace and work from home, something that has proved important to my health. I have enjoyed being a part of such a creative group and being able to share my progress and receive feedback from students from all over the world.”
Fynn’s experience working with West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service has piqued his interest in future public service collaborations, and he hopes to work on similar projects during the remainder of his time studying online with Falmouth and beyond. He told us: “I built up a positive relationship with the team at West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, who have said I am welcome back in the future. In the meantime, I am continuing to work on my small business where I make badges that advocate for people with disabilities.”
