Falmouth Student Anna Roth Wins Nikon Student Photographer of the Year
08 April 2025

Falmouth University’s reputation for photographic excellence was further cemented last week as third-year Press & Editorial Photography student Anna Roth was named Nikon Student Photographer of the Year at the UK Picture Editors Guild Awards 2024 in London.
Anna’s powerful series, titled The Loves and Losses of a Lifetime, earned her the award win at one of the most respected events in the UK’s photographic calendar, which celebrates the very best in photojournalism and editorial photography. The ceremony, held at Church House Westminster, brought together industry professionals, editors, and rising stars to recognise outstanding work across the field.
Anna's photo series explores the enduring impact of personal and collective history through the lives of individuals, each shaped by war, love, displacement, and tradition. Each photo reveals a deep connection to the past - through cherished objects, lifelong work, cultural heritage, and places left behind.
Since 2018, Falmouth’s Documentary & Editorial Photography BA(Hons) (previously named Press & Editorial Photography) has consistently featured in the award's shortlist - with students winning the Student Photographer of the Year category every year since 2019. Anna’s award win continues this remarkable legacy and reflects the course’s emphasis on strong visual storytelling, real-world experience, and professional development.
Course Leader, Gretchen Viehmann said: “The course team and I are thrilled with Anna winning the Nikon Student Photographer of the Year award at this year’s UK Picture Editors Guild Awards. Anna joins a long line of students from our course whose work has been recognised by the industry at these prestigious awards, and we are delighted to celebrate her talent.”
