Games Academy: Research & Knowledge Exchange

GA RKE image

We unite disciplines and leverage technology to explore new modes of creative design and innovation. Our mission is to build tools and discover insights that help others harness the potential of games to solve meaningful problems.

Research focus

The Games Academy is a leader in games education, a position underpinned and sustained through internationally recognised scholarship on play, creativity, and related fields; and which permeates across the industry, education, and third-sector contexts. We leverage transdisciplinary perspectives - a fusion of industrial and academic lenses - to explore new modes of design and innovation.

Our focus is the virtuous cycle between theory and practice in the creative industries, with particular attention to the games industry and those industries adopting digital game technologies.

We strive to encourage critical thought with a view to enhance culture, society, public policy, health, the environment, economic success, and quality of life. This is achieved through a rich combination of traditional and practice-based research, knowledge exchange, business incubation, and teaching. Our eight thematic areas are:

  1. Game studies
  2. Immersive experience design
  3. Content pipeline automation
  4. Digital learning
  5. Indie game enterprise
  6. Health and wellbeing
  7. Sustainable technology
  8. Metacreative practice
