This Research & Knowledge Exchange Doctoral Project brief summarises our priority areas of research interest under the heading of: Exploring the Transformative Potential of AI-Powered Serious Games in Education

We welcome all research degree applications aligned with and in response to this brief.

Project brief details

This project investigates the transformative power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within serious games designed for educational purposes. Serious games, unlike traditional entertainment games, focus on achieving learning objectives beyond mere amusement. Research will explore how AI can personalise learning experiences, enhance engagement, and promote deeper understanding in various subjects.

Potential research questions might include:

  • How can AI personalise game content, difficulty levels, and feedback mechanisms to cater to individual learning styles and needs within serious games?
  • What types of AI-powered mechanics can be utilised to foster critical thinking, problem-solving, collaborative learning, and transferable skills in educational game environments?
  • How can serious games be tailored by AI to address specific learning objectives and cater to diverse learning styles?
  • What are the ethical considerations surrounding data collection, player profiling, potential biases, and ensuring responsible AI development within serious games?
  • How can AI be harnessed to create adaptive learning experiences that adjust in real-time based on participant performance, engagement, and knowledge gaps?

Research Methodologies:

The project is likely to employ a mixed-methods approach. Quantitative data analysis (e.g., learner performance data, user interaction data) can be combined with qualitative methods (e.g., interviews, focus groups) to understand participant experiences, learning outcomes, and the impact of AI on gameplay.

Strategic alignment

Projects deriving from this brief are expected to sit within the Research & Knowledge Exchange strategy and the following department.

Department Games Academy

All successful research degree project proposals must emphasise a clear alignment between the project idea and our Research & Knowledge Exchange strategy.
