Course details

This is a two-day practical introduction to the black and white darkroom, with the option to bolt-on an additional two days’ supervised access to the darkroom to continue developing the skills you have learned on the course.

You’ll learn how to work in a professional darkroom to develop and print your photos, using a variety of processes and techniques. You can bring your own film to process or use our sample negatives.

On this course, you will:

  • Have an introduction to our professional black and white darkroom, learning about how to use the space and what the chemicals do - giving you the confidence to use a darkroom on your own following the course.
  • Learn how to use a photographic enlarger in the black and white darkroom.
  • Learn how to hand process black and white film.
  • Have a printing introduction, learning about a variety of printing techniques.
  • Learn about how to assess your negatives.
  • Have time and plenty of opportunity to experiment and get creative with different techniques, including photograms.
  • Learn about more advanced darkroom techniques, including dodge burn, split grade and split grade dodge and burn, and how to use an easel.
  • Have a group print review in the Gallery on our final afternoon.
  • Take your prints away with you.
  • Have the opportunity immediately following this course to extend your access with an additional optional bolt-on of 2 days’ supervised access to the darkroom, with ad-hoc support from a technician and critique available at the end of each day.

See the course outline for more detail about what we’ll cover each day.

This course is based in our specialised facilities at the Institute of Photography, and is co-delivered by Steph Cosgrove and Dave Mann, both experienced professional photographers and photography educators at Falmouth for our photography degree courses.

The course includes all materials, and tea/coffee each day. We recommend that you bring a packed lunch with you, or visit one of our on-campus cafés.

Course outline

On day one, you’ll learn how to use our professional darkroom safely and effectively, and the basic printing techniques you can use. We will start with an introduction to the course and to how to use the facilities, then we’ll dive straight into a hands-on workshop looking at photograms and how to use easels. In the afternoon we will explore how to hand process black and white film, with a hand tanking workshop followed by a contact sheets workshop. There will be plenty of time for experimentation and play, whilst being supported throughout by our course tutors.

Now you’ve got the basics covered, our second day will focus on at more advanced darkroom techniques. We will explore techniques including dodge burn, split grade, and split grade dodge and burn. We’ll finish the afternoon by moving to our gallery space where we will review our prints together, discuss learnings, and celebrate achievements to end the course.

There is an optional addition of 2 days’ further access to the black and white darkroom on days 3 and 4 to continue developing your printing skills. These days are not taught, but there will be ad-hoc supervision and support available from our technical team at the Institute of Photography as required, and feedback available during the afternoons from one of the course leaders.

Please note that there is an additional cost for this optional addition, and materials for this are chargeable separately.
