When choosing a university, one of my priorities was feeling safe in its environment.

During my first visit to Falmouth University at an Open Day, I was immediately struck by how comfortable and at ease I felt. That initial sense of calm turned out to be a true reflection of how safe I have felt studying at Falmouth, not only on campus but also in Falmouth town

Living in a quieter town rather than a busy city has certainly contributed to my sense of security, but it is not the only reason. In my first year, I was introduced to several measures the University has in place to ensure student safety. One of these is the SafeZone app, which allows students to request immediate help or first aid in case of an emergency. Additionally, the University provides a 24/7 safety and support service, offering peace of mind not just to me, but to many of my fellow students. There’s also Speak Out, a system that enables students to report issues like harassment or bullying, either anonymously or formally.

I can honestly say that Falmouth University’s commitment to student safety has made all the difference to my academic journey.

Living on campus in my first year played a key role in helping me adjust to university life. It made me feel more at ease, and whenever I visited friends in other student accommodation, I always felt equally as secure. Now, in my second year, I live in student housing, and while it's a bit different from campus accommodation, I still feel calm and safe. The community in Falmouth is incredibly welcoming, and I often take solo walks to clear my mind during stressful times, feeling completely at ease.

What I’ve come to appreciate most is that safety here extends beyond the physical environment. It’s about the sense of support, not only from Falmouth University but from the wider community. From the helpful staff in the Student Support team to the friendly locals you meet on a beach walk, who make you feel truly at home.

Falmouth has created an environment where students can thrive and because of this I have felt secure enough to step out of my comfort zone and explore all around Cornwall. The safety measures in place also gave me the confidence to navigate the town independently - something I did within just two days of arriving - and to seize new opportunities without constantly worrying about my wellbeing.

Looking back, I can honestly say that Falmouth University’s commitment to student safety has made all the difference to my academic journey. This sense of security has allowed me to participate fully in university life - from late-night study sessions to attending events and meeting new people - without feeling anxious or unsafe.

If you’re considering university but have concerns about safety, I highly recommend taking this factor into account when making your decision on where to study. A supportive, secure environment not only makes university life more enjoyable but can also help you focus on what really matters: learning, growing, and making the most of your time as a student.
