Competition season begins for student surfers
12 March 2025

Students who are part of Falmouth University’s FalSurf society are currently preparing for their next competition at the Varsity Championships, which will be held at The Wave, Bristol on 26 March. At the event, 24 members of FalSurf will compete against nine other universities from the southwest, including Plymouth, Exeter, Bristol, UWE, Cardiff, Swansea, Southampton, Bath and Bournemouth.
For those attending, both intermediate and advanced competitions will take place, in addition to beginner, non-competitive sessions for other FalSurf members. The event aims to be an inclusive space and will have something for the experienced competitive surfer and novices alike.
Entrepreneurship & Innovation Management MSc student, Kate Richards, will be attending the surf competitions with her sustainable surf product, Radical Wax.
Radical Wax will be supporting the FalSurf team and providing wax for their boards. They will also be giving winners a bundle of wax for their efforts and running giveaways and discounts to all competitors.
This partnership comes after Kate launched Radical Wax before enrolling as a student at Falmouth, and she has since used her time on the course to further build and develop the brand.
For students keen to compete before Varsity, the more laid-back FalSurf Cup will be held on Newquay’s Fistral Beach on 15 March. This relaxed competition encourages members of FalSurf to compete in a fun and friendly environment. Whether new or well-seasoned in the world of competitive surfing, this competition sees students competing against as many as 40 other surfers in a format of four-person heats. The top two performers of each heat will progress to the next round, until the top four are reached. From here, the top four surfers compete to be crowned with either 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th place. The day consists of both men’s and women’s categories – and acts as a fantastic introduction to competing.
For those interested in honing their skills before the competition season begins, FalSurf are hosting surf lessons in March, which ranges in price from £12 to £24 to include transport, the lesson, and gear. These are held once a fortnight with Wavehunters UK at Watergate Bay, Newquay, and offer the opportunity for new surfers to find their feet on Cornwall’s waves.
