This online short course in video production has been designed specifically for people looking to gain a thorough understanding of what goes into producing quality video content.
Whether you are currently leading on or involved in video production within a company - or are building your own brand - on this short, online course you will explore industry processes and gain the confidence and skills required to produce video content that can make a real-world impact.
Co-developed by experienced subject specialists from Falmouth University’s renowned creative and industry-focused environment, you will gain the contemporary knowledge and technical skills required to excel in video production.
You will:
- Gain a general understanding of the full videomaking process
- Explore different types of film types, from interviews to drama and experimental short films
- Gain confidence in basic editing techniques in both video and audio
- Create a finished video working within current industry processes
- Develop confidence and creativity when pitching ideas for video content
- Learn how to think critically and professionally about your practice
Course details
Combining theoretical and practical approaches, this six-week short course will improve your understanding of video production and will equip you with the technical skills required to produce engaging video content for your chosen context.
In the first session, you will get a thorough introduction to common filmmaking processes and the broader industry. You will then explore a different element of video production each week; from planning and interview techniques to technical areas such as lighting and camera work. You will also gain skills in post-production and editing, as well as marketing/dissemination of your video projects.
You will finish the course with a greater confidence in your theoretical knowledge and practical skills and will feel empowered to deliver impactful video content that can benefit your business or brand.
Weekly topics
You will define what you want to get out of this course, including an idea for a short film that you will aim to complete during the course.
You will flesh out the previous week’s idea for a short film, working out how it fits into a three-act structure and create a production plan ahead of filming.
Learn technical skills in composition, lighting, camera work and audio. Use these skills to film a professional-standard interview.
Reflecting on the skills developed filming your interview, we will discuss interview techniques, hints, and tips about how to create an engaging interview; how to illustrate the interview and make the most of emotion on film.
Learn basic editing techniques in both video and audio and explore how music and sound can take a film to another level.
Develop ways of making the most of your finished piece of video and how to use and adapt it to engage audiences in your business.

How you'll learn
Studying online is the ideal option for those looking for flexibility while elevating their career prospects. Our online short courses have been designed from the outset to be delivered online, meaning they're crafted specifically for you to study remotely.
You'll spend approximately four hours a week completing your studies. This may include:
- Reviewing all core lecture content and sharing your reflections on the topics discussed
- Reading and responding to discussions and challenge activities
- Completing required reading
- Attending weekly webinars with your tutor and peers (or watching the recording if you can't attend)
- Asking questions and sharing your thoughts with your tutors and peers
- Completing quizzes to test your knowledge
Through a combination of these teaching methods, you will be encouraged to push yourself, explore professional skills and develop expertise to take back into industry.
You will access all materials via our dedicated virtual learning environment. This is also where you will find all key documentation and any course announcements.
You'll be supported by your tutor, who will deliver weekly webinars and facilitate the online forums.
How you'll be assessed
This course will culminate in a multiple-choice quiz to test your learning and understanding. The quiz is taken and submitted online at the end of the course and certification will be presented upon successful completion of the quiz (70% pass mark).
The quiz can be attempted as many times as required within a 30-day access period following completion of week 6 of the course. You will still be able to access your learning materials during this time to support completion of the quiz.
Please note, this course does not offer university credits but successful participants will be awarded a certificate of completion alongside building key skills for the workplace.
