Senior Lecturer / Course Co-ordinator (Stage 1)

Nicola is one half of MOTH, which is a research project, that investigates the skills and contributions communication designers can make to death studies and end of life experiences. Working across a number of applied projects with a broad range of partners and practitioners; (academics, medics, artists, experience designers, historians , philosophers, sociologist, curators, writers and students). Moth has focused on both design practice within pedagogy as well as applied innovation of products and events. It aims to challenge attitudes, conventions and context surrounding death and dying.

Nicola joined Falmouth in 2006 and works across all three undergrad years. She is an External examiner for UAL from 2020.

Research Interests

Research interests and expertise

Moth Death & Dying

• Opening windows for meaningful conversation, communication and connection.
• Promoting a sense of well-being, reduced anxiety (through empowerment).
• Creating a sense of achievement and legacy.
• Facilitiating a place for creative exchange and contribution.
• Advocacy for mourning. Acceptance of sadness is a natural and necessary part of a maturing process, reducing stress, anxiety and depression in the surviving relatives.
• Recognising that the purpose of grief is not to move on without those one who have died, but to find a secure place for them and that recounting the life of the deceased is not just a secular alternative to religious ritual, but a social-psychological necessity.
