Course Leader, BA Acting

Matthew trained at East 15 Acting School on the Foundation Course in Acting followed by the BA Acting and Contemporary Theatre degree. Matthew has gone on to gain a PGCE from Essex University and an MA Actor Training and Coaching from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. He is also a Fellow of the HEA.

Matthew has spent over 12 years training actors at degree level. His opinion of good actor training focuses on co-collaboration with students in order to enable a sense of self-worth, agency and permission to explore and experiment with various approaches to creating work. This only happens if the students involved are enthused and persuaded that what they are bringing to the table is worthy of development and nurturing.

As he begins his role as Course Leader for the programme, Matthew is looking to build the reputation of Falmouth University, not only within the Higher Education sector within the UK and internationally, but also within the Performing Arts industry. Exploring national and international performance opportunities and experiences, whatever they may look like in the future, to develop the student experience and the reputation of the course. He believes collaboration with creatives that represent the future of the industry will lead to the course spearheading the developments within the industry and achieving excellence both from within and outside the University.

Matthew employs conscious casting within his practice; exploring and challenging any stereotypes linked to areas such as gender or race. The selection of material to explore within the curriculum is a key aspect of a successful contemporary programme of study. The opportunity to explore writers from the LGBTQ+ community as well as the Global Majority needs to be embedded by courses where possible to ensure inclusivity within the curriculum. An awareness of the intercultural approach to actor training and directing is an opportunity to learn and develop with all involved.
