Lecturer, Creative Writing BA(Hons) (Online)

I started teaching at Falmouth in January 2023 and it seems longer - but in a good way! I have taught on a variety of modules due to my broad portfolio, and I am Module Leader on Bound by None. The BA (Hons) in Creative Writing at Falmouth is massively industry focused and that gives added value to our students – academics here work in the creative industries and can offer an insider’s-eye-view. I love encouraging beginning and developing writers to find and establish their voice – and Falmouth University is a great place to do just that!

I have written everything from picture books and MG series to YA novels and a wide variety of genre fiction for adults under various pen names (long story!). I have also written for children’s TV series and comics; have been a newspaper 'agony aunt' and have written for many digital markets and publications. I've been a features writer for the Times Educational Supplement, and Green Parent Magazine. I've written many non-fiction books including titles of organics, downshifting, parenting, heritage crafts and relationships. Can you tell I have ADHD yet? I feel that my experiences as a neurodivergent academic is useful in terms of understanding the challenges facing neurodivergent students – so I count that as a win!

I have had many roles in my career and all those roads have led to, supplemented and inspired my writing. I've worked as a wildlife warden on a small island with a lighthouse, in a Bail Hostel and at a PRU. I lectured on the PGCE at Newcastle University whilst studying for my MPhil and during this time, I wrote many educational and home learning books.

I organise SCBWI North-East, and I am the Know-How Editor of their magazine Words and Pictures. I am a member of Lapidus (Writing for Wellbeing) and BFSA. I am the Seasonal Anthologies Editor for Trembling with Fear and work with Crystal Lake Publishing, developing their new children’s imprint. I am currently contracted to write a MG series about a young cryptozoologist, a YA that explores grief and the festivals of the dead, and an adult folk horror. I am also a features writer at British Beachcombing Magazine.

I am an experienced counsellor with Bereavement and Thanatology as my specialisms, and apart from writing chapters for a range of academic Horror Studies titles, I am currently writing a book for therapists on the use of horror in bibliotherapy and cinema therapy.
