Jono Wardle
Senior Lecturer, Creative Advertising
After considering Art then English, Jono chose to study graphic design. Within a year of graduating, he was working as an advertising art director and occasional copywriter, eventually becoming a board director and creative director at JWT London. During his 25 year career in advertising Jono was responsible for creating over 180 TV commercials and literally hundreds of press, posters and radio commercials. Apart from JWT he has worked at several agencies, including Fletcher Shelton Delaney, BMP (now ‘Adam & Eve’), RKCR/Y&R, Fallon and M&C Saatchi working on multi-media campaigns for a variety of clients, ranging from Virgin Airways, Barclays and Spitfire Ale, to Persil, Kit Kat and Kellogg. He also co-wrote the highly acclaimed 2012 London Olympic bid film, kindly, but quite seriously, attributed by Lord Coe as largely responsible for ultimately winning the bid for London.
Upon leaving the advertising industry and returning to Cornwall Jono was asked to become a founding board member of the Cornwall Design Forum and a Business Fellow for the Creative Industries at Falmouth University. This primarily involved overseeing live joint projects as well as working closely with the Design Council on the Designs of The Time Cornwall project. At the same time he worked with Cornwall Council to create a multi-media advertising campaign recommending Cornwall for recognition as a special ‘region of culture’ and NESTA to deliver ‘Insight Out’ bespoke short courses for local start-up creative businesses. He also worked with the Regional Development Agency conducting a ‘lack of skills’ audit of small businesses in Cornwall, helped deliver the ‘Higher Skills Pathway’ short courses and mentored graduate start-ups. Jono then started teaching on the new BA(Hons) Digital Advertising course at Falmouth. Over time this has involved rewriting much of the existing content and changing the course focus, and name, to ‘creative advertising’. In a baptism of fire, for someone not originally from the academic world, he also ran the course for 3 years.
Now the course has grown and become highly successful and Jono teaches several advertising modules continuing to help update the content to reflect the constantly changing advertising industry. When he gets a moment he still works on campaigns for various clients and goes out cycling.

Research Interests
Research interests and expertise
- Identifying changes in contemporary advertising practice due to emerging technologies; digital platforms; social and cultural influences.
- Developing course content to become better aligned with industry.
- Connecting Falmouth University with the advertising / communications industry in new and innovative ways.
Jono wants his research to inform ongoing course development and to ultimately have a practical outcome that can be used by practitioners and students alike. Whilst technologies have changed rapidly, creative thought processes and problem solving methodology (in advertising) has changed little. He believes it is easier to see the whole picture looking in from the outside and hopes to identify and exploit the most effective methodologies.
