Dr Chris Morgan
Lecturer in Formal & Non Formal Music Education
Chris is lecturer in formal and non-formal music education, co-ordinator of the Making Music modules and contributes to a number of other modules across the BA(Hons) Popular Music, BA(Hons) Creative Music Technology and BA(Hons) Music courses. He combines this work with his role as co director of MADE (formerly Music & Dance Education). Chris’s background is in music education and community/ outreach music-making. He trained as a clarinettist at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. He subsequently became head of woodwind and then head of instrumental services with the Inner London Education Authority, director of instrumental teacher training at the Guildhall and adviser for instrumental teacher & curriculum development with Cornwall LA.Having undertaken a Masters in Performance Arts at Middlesex University Chris completed his PhD at Exeter University. His specific interests are in instrumental/ vocal curriculum development, teacher training and research; life history and curriculum history research; instrumental teaching; conducting, rehearsing & directing; and arranging & composing.
Chris’s work with MADE embraces early years, schools & extended services, youth & community, healthcare and instrumental teaching & learning sectors. He has also worked closely with music services across the UK - providing advice, support and INSET courses for instrumental teachers and has also been developing music with pre-school groups and creative and reminiscence-based work with the elderly since 1996. He is a grade examiner with Trinity College, a course leader for the ABRSM professional development programme, a member of the Cornwall Music Education Hub Strategy Group and an adviser to the Cornwall Music Service Trust. He is also principal author of Instrumental Teaching and Learning in Context (NAME) and a variety of publications with Boosey & Hawkes, Chester Music, Trinity College and IMP.
