Andy Chatfield
Senior Lecturer in Journalism
Andy studied History at Cambridge University before training as a journalist. He is a former deputy editor of the Oxford Mail, who worked in the newspaper industry for 20 years in a range of roles in print and online. He has also run a freelance communication and design consultancy.
He joined the Writing & Journalism department at Falmouth University in September 2015, after eight years as a lecturer and course leader in Journalism at Southampton Solent University.
His teaching specialisms include reporting practice, publication design, media law and public affairs. His research interests include inclusivity in the arts sector, community and participatory journalism, collaborative pedagogy and Cornish social history.

Research interests and expertise
Andy's research and knowledge exchange interests include community and participatory journalism, and the opportunities for collaborative media engagements between students, academics and citizens. He was also the co-lead on two projects (one research report, one podcast) exploring the deficit in equity, diversity and inclusion in the governance of cultural organisations. His passion for passion for Cornish social history has fuelled an interest in the relationship of current communities to the landscapes of the county's past.

Andy provides freelance communications and design services to a range of commercial and community clients.

Andy runs the digital communications for a Community Benefit Society for a community village shop in Cornwall.

Andy presented a paper entitled Dreams of revival: Hysteria, Repentance and Conversion in Cornish Chapels Past and Present at the Dark Economies Haunted Landscapes conference in 2023.
