Students photograph the hidden heart of Bethnal Green in London exhibition
23 April 2025

Students from Falmouth University’s Documentary & Editorial Photography BA(Hons) degree have brought the stories of Bethnal Green to life in their latest annual exhibition at Oxford House, London. Titled 24 Hours in Bethnal Green, the show opened earlier this month and celebrated 10 years of collaboration between Oxford House and Falmouth University’s Institute of Photography.
The exhibition is the result of an intensive, collaborative project involving students from all three year groups. Each student had just 24 hours to submit three images that told a story about Bethnal Green. Arriving in East London on Monday, the students were given one day to explore the streets of Bethnal Green and document its people and culture. By Tuesday, the work was edited and printed, and by Wednesday, it was on display in Oxford House’s gallery space.
The opening night was packed, with visitors from across the capital attending to see the students' responses to the challenge. Feedback has already been overwhelmingly positive, with Oxford House praising the professionalism and creativity of the students. The local community has also responded warmly, with many expressing pride and excitement at being represented in the project.
Ashleigh Fensom, a final year Documentary & Editorial student, said: “As this is my final year, taking part in 24 hours in Bethnal Green exhibition was a great one! Running up to the exhibition, I was helping to create the posters, flyers, stickers, and this year, the addition of beer mats. This project is such a great escape from the pressure of university for a week - we always have such great fun celebrating our opening night and visiting as many galleries as we can in London.”
For Falmouth’s aspiring documentary photographers, this project offers a unique opportunity to work to a real editorial brief, navigate the challenges of a live, location-based assignment, and ultimately showcase their work in a major cultural venue.
24 Hours in Bethnal Green is open to the public at Oxford House until 29 August 2025, Monday – Friday, 10am to 6pm.
