Three graduates have completed micro-internships at the Cornish sustainable packaging company, Flexi-Hex.

Jonty Clark, Yevhen Karankevych, and Luke Fullerton, who studied within Falmouth’s Institute of Photography, all completed the placement in July. The placement tasked them with taking photographs for the company’s marketing assets as they collected waste materials across Cornwall for their packaging.

We caught up with Jonty Clark, who studied Marine & Natural History Photography BA, about his time on the placement.

How did the placement come about and what were you doing?

I found the 30-hour internship placement through the Handshake app. I was given a brief to produce an image campaign based on the recycling collection work that Flexi-Hex does on the streets and beaches of Cornwall. They use the materials they find to create their paper packaging products in an effort to reduce plastic waste.

What did you learn during your time there?

The placement helped to further develop my skills in responding to specific briefs and delivering results that clients are happy with. I didn’t have to do any re-dos or change the photos.

It was also a good insight into what it’s like to work with a team remotely and still deliver high-quality results.

What were the people like at Flexi-Hex?

They were a lovely team at Flexi-Hex. My contact was with Rose (who happens to be a Falmouth graduate), who had a strong visual understanding and was great to collaborate with.

Would you recommend placements to other students?

I would definitely recommend placements to other students. It’s a great paid opportunity to work in the industry. I found it extremely valuable for broadening my skills, gaining real-world experience, and adding to my CV.

Do you have any other placements or projects coming up?

Currently, I’m continuing to work on a couple of projects of mine, one of which is "I have a few animals..." as well as a new interview series of photographers that I’m developing. I’m also continuing to work on commercial shoots in London and the surrounding areas.
