Photographers Shortlisted for Renowned Exhibition
25 July 2018
This year's graduates and staff from the Institute of Photography have had their work shortlisted for the prestigious exhibition, Portrait of Britain 2018.
The Portrait of Britain, an annual competition hosted by The British Journal of Photography, was originally conceived in 2016 with the objective of celebrating the many faces of modern Britain. To mark the third year of the exhibition, Hoxton Mini Press will be publishing the first ever Portrait of Britain book, with all winning entries published within its pages.
The shortlisted photographers from Falmouth are:
• Alexander Fleming – Rehabilitating Roy's Parrot
• Amara Eno – The 25 Percent
• Michelle Sank – Capreese
• Arabelle Zhuang – Spectrum
• Ellie Smeaton – The Liquid Weapon
• Tom Jamieson – Celia Paul
Ellie Smeaton, Press & Editorial Photography graduate, created The Liquid Weapon project which aims to raise awareness of acid attacks within the UK, with a 90% increase in the last ten years.
Ellie explained: "In recent years, we have seen a concerning growth in attacks of this type across the country. This issue needs to be tackled, and The Liquid Weapon is a visual platform that educates and informs people about this growing issue.
"I feel incredibly humbled to have been shortlisted for the award. Not only it is a brilliant personal achievement, but it's also such great exposure for The Liquid Weapon campaign. To be shown alongside such wonderful photographers is an honour."
Geoff Smith, Director of the Institute of Photography, stated: "We're absolutely thrilled to see the Institute of Photography represented so well in this very prestigious national competition. Alongside the work of our Senior Lecturer Michelle Sank, many of our recent graduates and alumni have also had their work selected.
"What we're especially pleased about is that the selection of our graduates' work displays not only the professionalism that is embedded in all our courses, but also reflects the impact of MAYN, our in-house creative agency, that has mentored these students to hone their professionalism through real world work."
