06 August 2024
Photography BA (Online) student Cody Jai Murray has been announced as a finalist for the Association of Photographers (AOP) Emerging Talent Awards.
Cody, who is in her first year, was selected as a finalist for four images she entered in the ‘People’ category of the awards, which celebrate the best photographers and image makers who have been practising for less than three years.
We recently chatted to Cody about being selected, her work, and her plans for the future.
How does it feel to get industry recognition for your work?
It feels different than your friends and family liking your work, for sure! Knowing that people who are working in the industry have seen something in my work motivates me to continue pushing creative boundaries and trying new things.
Tell us about your Symbiosis project.
The inspiration behind the Symbiosis project was a collaboration between two hair artists and how they challenge traditional norms, redefining what hairdressing is known for.
The photoshoot for the Symbiosis project took place at barber’s Ruger, where I set my studio up in the main space. The collaboration ‘Ruger x Mckoy had the vision to break away from conventional labels and create a truly gender-neutral space, reflecting a modern, inclusive approach to hairdressing.
The models used in the project were selected to represent a diverse range of looks and backgrounds, aligning with the inclusive ethos of Ruger. The models were sourced from J’Adore Model Agency and Finding Creatives Agency, as well as a local pub, ensuring a professional and varied representation.
Stacey and Alan, the creative minds behind the project, have been good friends for over eight years. Their collaboration began when Stacey decided to close her own salon to join Alan at Ruger. This partnership brought together their shared vision and creative energy, culminating in the Symbiosis project. The collection they created aims to showcase the salon's commitment to being a gender-neutral space, breaking away from traditional gender norms in the hairdressing industry.
How have you found your course so far?
The course has helped me gain a deeper understanding of the artistic aspects of photography and the importance of having a strong concept and narrative behind my work. The lecturers are all amazing, and each one gives a different insight and experience.
Watch Cody discuss her experience of the course below.
What's next for you?
I’d love to gain some experience in commercial photography. I've been looking into assisting, but it's proving to be more difficult than I thought. But who knows! There is so much I want to do.
