Members of Falmouth’s online Creative Events Management community were inspired by professionals and trailblazers across the events industries during a recent in-person event.

Across three exciting days in London earlier this year, the group of master's students and staff attended the International Confex conference – an event bringing together events industry professionals to learn, network and gather inspiration – the Green Events Innovations (GEI) Conference – the UK's leading conference for sustainability in the sector organised by course partner A Greener Future – and the Event Production Show.

Among the talks and presentations on the agenda for the group were guest speaker sessions from eleven sector leaders, several Education Hub panel sessions hosted by the Association for Events Management Education, as well as plenty of free time to explore the exhibitions stands and to network.

One student commented: “I went into the trade show thinking it wasn't going to do much for me at this stage, but I left with the wheels turning almost too fast after seeing the options available.”

Another student added: “I was impressed by the use of virtual reality for event space planning and the incorporation of sustainable materials in event decor. The networking opportunities with industry leaders and professionals passionate about sustainability were enriching and promising for my career in creative events management.”

Course Leader Chantal Laws told us: “Whilst we have a vibrant and supportive online community for the course, and these (optional) opportunities to gather face to face are a real treat for colleagues and students alike. This year, we had students joining us from all stages of the course, and we also had the opportunity to connect with two of our alumni at GEI as well.”

She added: "The opportunity to enhance peer relationships and the experiences gained through our in-person trips are highly valuable, and I can already see the positive and inspirational impact that attending these cutting-edge industry events has had on our students’ work."

Robert Kenwood, a specialist recruiter for the events and experiential sectors, led a workshop for the students, and was impressed by them, taking to LinkedIn to comment: “These peeps are not only working full time, but they are studying hard to achieve a master’s and looking to improve their career choices. I spent an hour with them at International Confex workshopping next steps, interview techniques, approaching employers, working with recruiters and most importantly how to market yourself. If the session is anything to go by, the future is bright for events!”
