In January, the National Saturday Club Trust, Falmouth University Saturday Clubs and Arts University Plymouth Saturday Clubs came together for a special Masterclass event, designed to support young people aged 13-16 to push themselves creatively while also engaging with hands-on career advice.
The masterclass was delivered in collaboration with international swimwear brand Speedo, who led the day with an exciting design brief.
The design brief was set around a theme of ‘Hawaii’. Using the brief, and being limited to four different paint colours, club members worked together to create beautiful swimsuit designs. They then placed a ‘swimsuit template’ over the best part of their design, and the most highly voted designs will go into production with Speedo. All of the club-designed swimsuits will also go on display at an end of year showcase in London.
This is the first time that Speedo – part of Pentland Brands - have worked with the South West National Saturday Clubs scheme, and was a huge success with young people and organisers.
Speaking during the day, Speedo shared their experience of product design with club members.
“The idea [of National Saturday Clubs] is a fantastic immersive experience for the young people, which always sparks pure joy”.
Falmouth University’s Saturday Club Co-ordinator Helen Norman said “We were all so pleased that Speedo agreed to deliver their Masterclass with the South West Saturday Clubs this year; it is a real honour to engage with such a high profile company.
“The club members found out about a whole range of job roles with parent company Pentland Brands that they weren’t aware of, and fed back that they really enjoyed designing with young people from different clubs.
“The Saturday Club Managers and I are incredibly proud of our super creative club members, and very much hope to see them studying at Falmouth University in the future!’’
