BA(Hons) Creative Events Management, BA(Hons) Sustainable Tourism Management and BA(Hons) Sustainable Festival Management students gained invaluable experience working on the G7 summit in Cornwall.

Each year the leaders of the world’s seven largest economies meet to tackle global issues. The social and economic impact of Covid-19 made this year’s event arguably the most significant in the summit’s history.

Students from the School of Entrepreneurship got the chance to be involved in this landmark event, working for live events agencies Identity and weIMPLEMENT. With the world’s press reporting on proceedings, the pressure was on to ensure operations ran smoothly.

Third year BA(Hons) Creative Events Management student Becki Wingell was at the heart of the action with organising a special delivery for the Prime Minister among her list of tasks.

As Becki tells us, “it was an eventful few days, to say the least! I organised mesh banners for last minute printing, collected catering, coordinated the distribution of covid tests and handed out VIP passes. I also had to keep pilots, foreign office officials and camera people happy. On top of that I was asked to buy nappies for Boris Johnson!”

Becki’s course mate Hazel Veitch was also thrown in at the deep end of the G7, reflecting on the experience as an “amazing opportunity to work within a global company”.

Zoe Lucy, Director at weIMPLEMENT, was extremely impressed by the student contributions to the G7.

“The team that supported us were some of the most diligent and conscientious individuals we have worked with, offering maturity and skill beyond their years and experience. Their enthusiasm, intelligence and proactiveness allowed them to shine in their roles and went far beyond what we expected, delivering on every task they implemented.

Event producer at Identity Clare Hampson was also impressed by the students’ work ethic. “We were delighted to work alongside students from the Event Management Course at Falmouth University in delivering the G7. Not only were they a real pleasure to work with, but they were team-players, reliable, hardworking and pro-active.”

And course Leader Matt Kirby believes that the hands-on experience the students gained during the G7 will do exactly that. “Micro-placements are a vital aspect of the Creative Events Management course as they enable our students to interact directly with the events industry; these ‘real-life’ work experiences really enhance their understanding and appreciation of the finer details in events management.”
