D&AD New Blood Awards: Falmouth students scoop Pencils & 'portfolio picks'
13 July 2021
Falmouth’s Creative Advertising and Illustration students have once again excelled at the annual Design and Advertising (D&AD) New Blood Awards.
The D&AD New Blood Awards are recognised globally as the ultimate creative accolade, entered and attended by some of the best creative thinkers around the world.
They provide students with the opportunity to land a job in the creative industry by getting a head start while still at university or through gaining the exposure needed to kick start their creative careers.
This year, Creative Advertising teams picked up six Pencils (White, Graphite and Wood) and Illustration students were spotlighted by D&AD as 'ones to watch' in the New Blood Festival Portolio Picks.
Meet the Creative Advertising Pencil winners
Falmouth’s Creative Advertising students and graduates shone in the festival Pencil awards, with creative teams picking up one White, two Graphite and four Wood Pencils.
Winners include: James Nicholls & Alasdair Munroe for Find Your Character (White & Wood), Grace Cruickshank & Martin Strahilov for Duolingotchi (Graphite), Jemima Bubb & Xiaoyan Li for #BreakTheBorders (Graphite), Chris Will & Freya Williams for Wise Up to Words (Wood), Georgia Lamb & Louis Friedlander for Coors Unplugged (Wood), and Sam Oldham & Julia Matthew for Pro Every Person (Wood).
Jono Wardle, Senior lecturer in Creative Advertising, was proud to see his students stand out in an extremely competitive field.
“Once again, our wonderful Creative Advertising students have truly excelled at the world’s most prestigious global D&AD (New Blood) advertising awards by winning three Wood and two Graphite Pencil awards as well as two of our recent graduates winning a Wood and a White Pencil award.
“They were in competition with over 6000 student creatives from over 60 countries and everyone here at Falmouth couldn’t be any prouder. These hard won and highly respected awards will certainly give a kick-start to their careers.”
We are not surprised that so many have been acknowledged in such a prestigious competition and we are immensely proud of them all.

New Blood Festival Portfolio Picks
Falmouth’s Illustration students also had plenty to shout about. With six students listed as ‘ones to watch’ in the Festival Portfolio Picks: Amy Sutton, Daniel Converio, Ellie Lonsdale, Ewan White, Lily Stock and Eleanor Bannister were all highlighted as designers with bright futures ahead of them.
Graham Black and Natalie Hayes, lecturers in BA (Hons) Illustration, reflected on a “phenomenal” effort from their students.
“The phenomenal success of Falmouth Illustration BA (Hons) students scooping six of D&AD’s New Blood Festival Portfolio Picks is testament to the amazing talent and resilience of our students. It demonstrates how our graduates leave Falmouth ‘industry ready’, culturally aware and poised to embark upon their creative careers. We are not surprised that so many have been acknowledged in such a prestigious competition and we are immensely proud of them all.”
